An early Sunday morning shooting on Tuskegee University’s campus in Alabama claimed the life of an 18-year-old and left at least 16 others injured, including students, during the school’s centennial homecoming celebrations, officials reported.
No arrests have been made, according to a statement from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) on Sunday afternoon.
The incident took place around 1:40 a.m. on Tuskegee’s Macon County campus as homecoming events, including a football game against Alabama’s Miles College on Saturday, were wrapping up.
Police radio communications indicated multiple individuals may have been involved in the shooting. “There are two suspected shooters, potentially more,” an officer noted during a call, based on transmissions recorded by Broadcastify.
Tuskegee University confirmed in a statement that a non-student lost their life in the shooting. “The parents of the deceased have been notified,” the statement read. “Several others, including Tuskegee University students, are receiving medical care at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery.”
Authorities announced that the person killed was 18 years old. Of the 16 injured, 12 suffered gunshot wounds, while four others sustained injuries while trying to flee from the scene.
Footage shared on social media depicted people diving for cover as a series of gunshots rang out, showing a chaotic scene as individuals sought safety.
The Macon County Sheriff’s Office has requested assistance from ALEA’s Bureau of Investigation, which is currently leading the inquiry and working to determine the events that led to the shooting. The scene is now secured by multiple law enforcement agencies, ALEA reported, and investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward. Witnesses are also encouraged to share digital files, including video footage, with the FBI.
University officials are continuing to verify student attendance and are notifying parents as they receive updates. Tuskegee University announced that classes will be suspended on Monday to allow investigators to examine the scene, and grief counselors will be available at the university’s chapel for students.
